Reduce Swelling of Cystic Acne: Look and Feel Better
Of all the different types of acne, nodular or cystic acne is in many ways the most frustrating. Not only are the lesions obvious and a little embarrassing, they are also quite painful. Unlike milder forms of acne that occur closer to the surface of the skin, cystic acne affects the deep tissue. Subsequently, successful treatment of the lesion takes a little longer than treating "regular" acne. But even though clearing up the cyst will take some time, you can reduce swelling of cystic acne relatively quickly. Treating the inflammation will reduce the pain and improve the appearance of the lesion which will make the episode a little more bearable. Here are a few "tricks" we've found that reduce swelling of cystic acne.
Benzoyl peroxide is the staple of any acne fighting arsenal and it does have anti-inflammatory properties. But it is more than just an anti-inflammatory, it also anti-bacterial and an anti-comedonal (reduces oil production). Overuse of the complex will only irritate your skin even further. For that reason, use benzoyl peroxide as directed, but enhance it's anti-inflammatory properties with natural acne treatments to reduce swelling of cystic acne.
Household Items that Can Help
There are several things you already have around the house that may help. Applying ice to the affected area for about 15 minutes is one of the simplest way to reduce the swelling.
Egg white is another tried and true remedy - dab egg white on the area and allow it to dry for about 20 minutes before rinsing it off with tepid water. A toothpaste that contains alkaline may also help - apply it the affected area and leave it on overnight.
There are herbal possibilities as well. Neem, a mainstay of Ayervedic mainstay is known for it's ability to soothe and heal skin disorders while Tea Tree Oil is a popular herbal acne treatment. The versatile herb, Bayberry Bark is particularly known for it's soothing anti-inflammatory effects.
Whatever treatment option you decide is best for you, resist the temptation to "squeeze." Squeezing a pimple is never recommended, but in the case of severe cystic acne, it will only prolong the outbreak and is likely to cause permanent scarring.
